2022 Pyrenees Viognier
2022 Pyrenees Viognier
White floral aromas, zingy apricot with a hint of roasted hazelnut.
A cool climate, restrained Viognier. White floral aromas, zingy apricot and a hint of roasted hazelnut.
Perhaps we should start by clarifying it's pronounced VEE ON YAY.
Native to the Northern Rhone valley in France, Viognier is often blended in small amounts with Shiraz (Syrah) to give the red wine a hand with supple tannins and a bit of fleshy apricot flavour. In Australia, Viognier had a bit of a bad reputation in the past - it was made in warm climates and these ripe and rich and alcoholic wines were accused of being like apricot jam. This wine doesn't have that issue though and the apricot influence on it is more like apricot blossom.
We picked early to ensure freshness, high natural acid and low alcohol, and the wine is naturally aromatic with citrus, stonefruit (particularly apricot), and mineral aromas. It was wild fermented in old french oak and matured in the barrel to give it a savoury complexity (hazelnut anyone?) and to help soften and round out the palate. There's not much of it and we'd prefer to keep it all for ourselves, but alas it is now available. It's fresh, vibrant, complex and well-balanced, great as an aperitif or with your favourite (not too heavy) food.
