Lemon, pear and subtle garden herbs with a hint of nuttiness and a slightly waxy texture provide for an intriguing wine.

We were fortunate to be offered a parcel of fruit from the only vineyard in the 3228 postcode in 2021. It came from a small, established block of Semillon that has as yet resisted being overrun by the urban development of Jan Juc (Insert your favourite Point Break quote here).
This wine surfs a wave of methoxypyrazines: the flavour compounds commonly found in varieties native to Bordeaux which result in herbaceous characteristics in wine. In the freshly pressed juice they were extremely prominent so the wine was treated to oxidative handling and aged in French oak with full malolactic fermentation to temper the green aromas.
The resulting wine finds a comfortable balance between a herbal freshness and a savoury, nutty richness. It is a little like the love child of a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay, and it's unlikely there will be Semillon from this vineyard again so give it a try before the tide turns.
